Figure 10.4 The stages of evolution of a mid-latitude depression, based on the Norwegian model of cyclogenesis. A disturbance on the polar front (A) leads to the development of a frontal wave (B). The system spirals in (C) until the cold front catches up with the warm front, leading to occlusion (D). The system then decays (E, F). (Adapted from Bjerknes and Solberg, 1922.)

So what conditions favour cyclogenesis on the polar front? The answer to this is complicated, as there are a great many factors to consider, although there are perhaps two main ingredients. To initiate cyclogenesis, we need the ascent on the polar front to be enhanced and maintained. For this to happen, we require a convergent flow at the surface to continually push air into the ascending column from below and a divergent flow aloft to pull air out of the column from above.
